March of the Revolutionary Youth

March on, march forward, revolutionary youth
March on, march forward, revolutionary successors!
Victory is calling,
The red flag is guiding,
Along the great revolutionary path opened by our forefathers,
Push forth the wheel of the history.
Mankind grows stronger in stormy wind and waves,
And revolution progresses in raging flames.
Facing the future,
Taking responsibility,
With our hot blood and a red heart,
Let us join with the workers and peasants,
To march on bravely toward our victory!
March on, march forward, revolutionary youth,
March on, march forward, revolutionary successors!
Hand in hand around the four oceans,
Heart with heart across the five continents,
For the world revolution,
We are determined to contribute our fighting youthful years.
Revolutionary youths of the world, unite closely,
With all the oppressed people!
Support and learn from each other,
Millions as one,
Let us march forward shoulder to shoulder.
Hold high the revolutionary banner and fight bravely.

Here is an example of a song that was written during the Cultural Revolution. It is talking about the youth of the country, who are revolutionaries, and it shows their march to victory. It is for the Revolution and it is showing that, even though they were young, they wanted to help advance the Revolution.

Red Successors

The Red Successors were a younger form of the Red Guard and they were taken in during the elementary years. They would become part of the Red Guard once they became older, but in order to feel more like Revolutionaries, the elementary schools decided to form the Red Successors. Their uniforms were of similar fashion to the uniforms of the Red Guard. Ji-Li was nominated to become a Red Successor, but her classmates found out that her father was a rightist and her grandfather was landlord. They were against Mao's ways.

Red Guard Uniform/Normal Everyday Wear

During the Cultural Revolution, the people had to wear either the uniform shown on the left or they had to wear khaki clothing in order to show that they were a revolutionary. Any old form of clothing from before the Revolution was thought to be bourgeois. Anyone who wore such clothing as pronounced to be bourgeois were punished and put through hardship. Ji-Li made to wear such clothing because she lived through the Revolution and so did her family.

Mao's Little Red Book

This picture shows the "Little Red Book" that practically every person in China carried during the Cultural Revolution

This pictures is symbolizing the little red book that Mao gave all of his people during the Cultural Revolution. The book was full of quotes that Mao wanted his people to use in real life situations. It is the physical manifestation of his way of thinking. It plays a vital role in Ji-Li's life because she lives among people who carry it around as if it is a bible. And she is exposed to the way of life that Mao expects the people to live in.

Da-Zi-Bao

The da-zi-bao was a way to expose and embarrass people who were against Mao. It was a written form of an insult. It was meant to point out all of the bad things about a person, an item, a store, or anything for that matter. Students had to write them about their teachers. In Red Scarf Girl, Ji-Li has some trouble about writing one about her teacher for the first time and instead, she copies one from a newspaper article. We are also given the image that practically everything had something bad written about it and on it.

Red Guard

This is an example of Red Guard Members.
The Red Guard members during the Cultural Revolution were Mao's "right-hand men." They made sure that anyone who wasn't following the communist way was punished and kept in line. They enforced his rules. For example, in Red Scarf Girl we are shown that they are ruthless and don't care about the belongings of others. As long as they get the job done, they are fine with doing it. They tore a man's pants because they were too tight and they also did the same act for his shoes. They said that it was a fourolds and that he must learn not to wear such clothing again.

Propaganda..Again

"Raise the red flag of Mao high and let us make a revolution to the end"

 This picture is showing the influence that Mao himself had on the people of China. If you notice, they are all youthful. Mao could not convince the older people because they had already developed their own beliefs and such. 


We can connect this to Red Scarf Girl because in the book, the children were very enthusiastic and believed in Mao; whereas, the parents of Ji-Li and the adults were reluctant and did not support Mao. They did not oppose of him either in order to survive his reign.


Alice seeing the Red Queen's servants painting her roses red. The Red Queen was not satisfied of the color and therefore demanded that they paint them red...or else.. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS.

I think that Alice in Wonderland is a good connection to Red Scarf Girl because of the fact that it has the color red and a central antagonist. The central antagonist in the two books are the Red Queen and Mao Zedong. They both cloak their nation in the color red and they want the people to conform and be as one, dress as one, think as one, and so forth.

The Four Olds

This poster symbolizes the Four Olds being removed from society. The words being crossed out are as listed from left to right: Collective Memory, The Old City, Cantonese, and Old Guangzhou Natives. The item that the man is pointing out is a ram; the ram is a symbol of Guangzhou.

Chairman Mao wanted to destroy the Four Olds in order to "build a strong socialist country." The Four Olds stood for old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. He made the people believe that the Four Olds lead to evil and that they had to be removed. 
 
We can relate this to Red Scarf Girl because in Chapter Two, they witness the campaign to destroy the Four Olds in Action. They took part in destroying the sign board of a store and they thought that it was the right thing to do. Then, on their way home, they changed the slogans on other signs because they thought it was a fourold. In the end, Ji-Li thinks to herself that they were proud of what they had done and they thought it was bringing a new life to China. (25)

Welcome!

I welcome you all to my virtual museum. I hope that you enjoy what you see here. I would like to introduce this as a place for you to come and look at several examples of artifacts. What I will be mainly focusing on are Chinese artifacts. These artifacts will be tied to the Cultural Revolution, which happened in 1966-1976; it was set into motion by Mao Ze-dong. Mao Ze-dong was trying to increase/advance socialism while reducing capitalist elements from the Chinese society.

The Chinese Revolution brought chaos to China as social norms evaporated and the established political institutions came apart at the seams, in other words, anarchy became the norm.
